I was born and raised in Emmett Township. I've lived in Calhoun County for over 47 years, and in Michigan my entire life. I was raised in a blue collar home where my Republican father and Democratic mother cancelled each others straight ticket votes at the poll each election year. That bi-partisan marital conversation that lasted my father's entire life, had a profound impact on my understanding of philosophical differences, and overlaps across the conservative/liberal conversation. I feel fortunate that I saw the world through both lenses.
My parents taught me the value of being self-supportive through hard work and dedication to your employer. Growing up, I think we all have moments where we just know we will never be like our parents. Then as adults, if we were fortunate to have great parents like I did; we find ourselves relying on the foundation they started for us. A few of these guiding principles that really shape the way I approach work and life include a fair wage for a hard days work; a job worth doing is worth doing well; the early bird gets the worm; they will know you by your works; be on time; be reliable; follow through when you commit; be honest; care for others more than you care for yourself; be faithful to your spouse, and to God.
I am married to my best friend, William (Bill) Evans. His love and faithful commitment inspires me. We met in fourth grade. He still owes me a prom date. Together, we have four adult children and a son waiting for us heaven. We also have one grandson and one granddaughter. We love the outdoors, our dogs Chloie, Rosie, and Daisy, and spending time together as a family.
Over the years, I've spent time volunteering at Life in Christ Ministry, the Substance Abuse Council, the Underage Drinking Prevention Coalition, Battle Creek Parks and Rec, the Harper Creek Educational Foundation, as well as volunteering at local school districts both in Battle Creek, and Marshall. I believe that God places gifts in each of us, and expects us to exercise these gifts in the community. I enjoy supporting programs, and people who are making a difference in our young people, and ultimately, our future.
